GSM Gateway Bypass is a growing problem which is costing 3G and GSM mobile operators millions of dollars each year. It is also one of the most severe threats to a telecom operator's revenue.
GSM Gateway operators are deliberately routing voice calls to avoid operators’ toll gateways at interconnect points. The most common method uses a GSM gateway (often referred to as a ‘SIM box’ or ‘GSM Router’) to terminate VOIP on an operator’s network as a local call.
The grey route operator brings international minutes over the internet and terminates them as local calls on the GSM operator's network, denying the operator the full international rate.
Also known as toll bypass fraud or grey routing, GSM gateway operations have a very low barrier to entry due to global internet connectivity, plug-and-play equipment and the emergence of 24/7 minute trading – new operations are being started up daily by profiteers out to exploit the differences in your termination charges.
Global losses due to telecom fraud have reached $35-$40 billion annually. Fraud rates are growing between 11% and 25% annually against a rate of between 3% and 8% for the telecoms industry itself [Communications Fraud Control Association].
Bypass fraud is now a significant part of this: it is not unusual for operators to lose $1 million per month due to bypass alone. In some cases this figure can be much higher.
